Spirit of Asian America Benefit Gala

The Asian American Federation will host its seventh annual Spirit of Asian America Benefit Gala this year on May 21st at Windows on the World. Confirmed honorees include Chris Lee, President of Chris Lee Productions; Jeannie Park, Executive Editor of In Style Magazine; Diosdado Banatao CEO of Tallwood Venture Capital; Dennis Swanson, President & General Manager of WNBC; and Midori Shimanouchi Lederer, President of Japanese American Social Services Inc. and one of the Federation�s founding board members.

Staff News

Jeanne Eng is AAF�s new Manager of Information Technology. Prior to joining the Federation, Jeanne was the Web Master at Brooklyn Information and Culture. She received her training at New York University.

Jeanne will head the Technology Volunteers Program and will provide support for PC troubleshooting to server administrations for the Federation and its member agencies. Welcome Jeanne!

Program & Agency News

The Coalition for Asian American Children and Families is sponsoring a roundtable discussion, "Meeting the Needs of Asian American Adolescent Young Men." Asian American adolescent men often face tremendous pressure as they seek to find a balance between the traditional gender roles defined by their families and the American expectations of young men. The panelists will examine some of the issues that they face in education, dating and sexuality, and gang violence. Strategies and methods will be discussed on how to reach out to this population. Panelists include, Lance Dronkers of Asian & Pacific Islander Coalition on HIV/AIDS, Inc , Eun Joo Kim of the Center for Youth Development, YWCA - Flushing Branch, and Eric Tang of the Youth Leadership Project, CAAAV: Organizing Asian Communities. Funding and Fellowship Opportunities

Okura Mental Health Leadership Foundation is seeking promising young Asian Pacific American leaders for a one-week leadership seminar in Washington, DC. The "Week in Washington" for 2001 is scheduled for April 28-May 4, 2001 and includes all expenses (transportation, lodging and meals). Any person of Asian Pacific American ethnicity engaged in the fields of social work, psychology, psychiatry, nursing, mental health, substance abuse, health and human services, and related fields is eligible. NYC Teaching Fellows is a highly selective program that is mobilizing talented professionals and recent graduates to teach in the city�s most under-performing schools.�The strategy of the Fellowship is to create a network of dynamic professionals determined to build effective classrooms where every student achieves. Previous coursework in education or teaching experience is not required. The two-year Fellowship includes a regular teaching salary, intensive training, on-going support, and an accelerated, fully paid Master's Degree program.
