Miami – September 24, 2014
Today is National Voter Registration Day, a nationwide effort to register hundreds of thousands of voters on one single day. A record number of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) serving organizations will participate in National Voter Registration Day, a nationwide effort to get Asian Americans more involved in the democratic process.
With Election Day just weeks away, today is the day for all of us to help eligible voters get register and be ready to head to the polls to take part on the thousands of elections happening at the local, state and federal levels and on the issues that matter most to them.
AAFF encourages citizens to participate in the election process by downloading the Florida Voter Registration Application or using online voter registration form in 10 different Asian languages (e.g. Chinese, Hindu, Ilocano, Korean, Tagalog, Vietnamese, etc) to choose your state to register your friends and family TODAY.
AAFF organized a successful Census 2010 Initiative in making history. The Asian population has grown 71% from 266,256 to 454,821 in Florida, between 2000 and 2010, to become one of the fastest growing racial groups in the United States. Now, the Asian population is recorded in every single county... 67 counties in Florida. The largest Asian population county is 56,795 in Broward, and followed by Orange County's 56,581, Hillsborough's 42,076, Miami-Dade’s 37,669 and 35,901 in Duval.
Based on the Florida Election Department, Asian American registered voters are 202,056, which is 1.7% of Florida voters (11.8 million).
“Voting is our chance to stand up for our families and communities by letting politicians know what matters to us, “ says Evelyn Bruce, Executive Director of NANAY Community Economic Development Corporation (NANAY-CEDC). “Voting is our duty and responsibility as citizens”.
“Now, AAFF will organize the 2014 Asian American Voter Initiative to increase voter registration and voter participation in Florida,” said Winnie Tang, President of AAFF. “We hope you can join in this Initiative… We need to be involved and visible so we won't be ignored and left out in the decision making process impacting our community!”
