Advancing Justice Conference on June 23-25, 2010

The Advancing Justice Conference, a national civil rights and social justice conference that aims to bring together a diverse group of stakeholders in one place to address a broad range of issues facing the Asian American and Pacific Islander community, will be held in Westin Alexandria, Washington DC on June 23-25, 2010.  It serves as a unique forum where researchers, advocates, direct service providers and other leaders can meet face-to-face, talk about their common challenges and find ways to work collaboratively.

The first day features a legislative briefing on a multitude of critical issues such as health, education, immigration, minority contracting, voting and other civil rights issues, while the following day includes tracks focused on capacity building, advocacy  and policy research and other priority issues of importance to the Asian American community.

Other planned highlights include the Annual Pearl Gala event and Young Leaders program.

Also the 2010 conference will coincide with the Smithsonian Folk Life Festival featuring Asian American and Pacific Islanders, which will give conference attendees an opportunity to participate in many activities related to the festival.

On Friday, June 25, the Asian American Justice Center will convene all Census 2010 grantees to review and share best practices and lessons learned in promoting Asian Census Complete Count in their respective regions.

More details will follow, but please make plans to attend.

The Advancing Justice Conference is a joint project by the Asian American Institute (Chicago), Asian American Justice Center (Washington, D.C.), Asian Law Caucus (San Francisco) and Asian Pacific American Legal Center (Los Angeles).

Pearl Gala II

Date: Thursday, June 24, 2010

Location: Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Washington, D.C. at 6:30 pm.

The Pearl Gala II is the evening highlight of an event-packed week for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) in the nation’s capital. Asian Pacific American organizations, community leaders, Congressional members and high-level Administration officials will attend Pearl Gala II to celebrate Asian Pacific American achievement at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel’s Grand Ballroom, site of the Pearl Presidential Inaugural Gala held in January, 2009. President Obama has been invited to attend.

We expect Pearl Gala II to be a very successful event similar to our experience with the first Pearl Gala. At the first Pearl Gala, Secretary Steven Chu of the Department of Energy and Secretary Eric Shinseki from the Department of Veterans Affairs were our special speakers. Gary Locke, now the Secretary of Commerce, also attended as well as Maya Sotero-Ng and Konrad Ng (the sister and brother-in-law of President Obama). Congressional members, members of the Obama administration and AAPI leaders from around the country are expected to come together again at this gala. Unlike the first gala with 1500 in attendance, Pearl Gala II will only accommodate 600 guests for a sit-down dinner in the Grand Ballroom. Space is very limited so we encourage you to purchase your ticket early.
