AAFF

The Asian American Federation of Florida (AAFF) is a 501(c)(3) coalition that aims to unity and collaboration among the various Asian Pacific American organizations and to improve the relationship of a culturally diverse Asian Pacific American community in Florida. The AAFF is a statewide organization made up of more than 70 Bangladesh, Burmese, Cambodian, Chinese, Filipino, Indian, Iranian, Korean, Laotian, Taiwanese, Thai, Turkish and Vietnamese faith-based and community-based organizations, businesses and media.

 

 

 

 

Asian American Federation Holds Immigration and Political Education Forum

             On October 10, 2010, the Asian American Federation of Florida held a special Immigration and Political Education Forum  in Orlando, co- hosted by the Filipino American Coalition of Florida.  A two-hour panel discussion was held to clarify the various aspects of immigration reform. Voters education booklets, provided by the Asian American Justice Center, were also distributed.

The proposed constitutional amendments and referendum to be voted on at the 2010 election were presented and explained, which included-
            * Repeal of public campaign financing requirement which would end taxpayer financing of political campaigns, if passed, or will  continue 
               public  financing requirement set 13 years ago.       
            * Proposed amendment  requiring the Legislature  to provide additional homestead property tax for members of the military  based upon the number of days in the previous calendar year that the person was deployed.  
            * Adoption and amendment of local government comprehensive land use plan.
            * Congressional and legislatlve redistricting;
            * Revision of the class size requirements for public schools;
            *  Non-binding  referendum that asks whether voters support a constitutional requirement that the federal government balance its budget.
    
The political platforms of all the Senatorial Candidates: Charlie Crist, Kendrick Meek and Marco Rubio, and the gubernatorial candidates:  Alex Sink and Rick Scott were also presented.  The presentation focused on the candidates' political background and stand on the subjects of economy, health care reform, social security, immigration, gay marriage, abortion, and environment.             
 
            The Asian American Federation of Florida is made up of organizations whose mission is to promote and enhance the appreciation of the ancestral legacy of Asian Americans in Florida. The Federation  serves as an educational and cultural resource for Florida's ethnic Asian communities and provides a forum for discussing issues of common interest to Asian Americans,
 
           Its president,  Dr. Joy Bruce, clarified and emphasized during the forum that "the Asian American Federation of Florida is strictly non-partisan and, as a 501(c)(3) organization, cannot and does not endorse any political party or political candidate. It only serves to educate."
